In 1848 gold was starting to be found in streams in California. California soon wanted to be their own state government to deal with the gold rush, but if California entered the United States it would throw off the the north and south balance. This resulted in a struggle to compromise.

The fugitive Slave Act

Part of the compromise of 1850 was the Fugitive Slave Act that did more harm than good.
